If you have ever talked to a real estate agent they have most certainly preached about the 3 L’s: Location, Location, and of course Location.
April, May, and June are the hottest months for real estate sales as well as college hiring. Even though a majority of graduating student-athletes have never been in the real estate market, many are harping on the 3 L’s during their career search. More specifically I have seen many student-athletes pass on jobs outside of cities like New York, Chicago, and LA. To prove a point Let’s play “would you rather”.
Question 1: Would you rather live in Ames, Iowa or New York City? I think a majority of 22/ 23 year old would pick the Big Apple over Ames Iowa, despite the fact Ashton Kutcher was born there.
Question 2: Would you rather live in a city with an unemployment rate of 2.3% or 6%? I hope you like corn, cows, and Cheaper By the Dozen ( guests appearance by Ashton Kutcher) because you are headed to God’s country, Ames, Iowa.
Larger cities tend to have higher unemployment rates because of the population as well as the lure of city life. In this case New York City has almost a 3 times higher unemployment rate than Ames, Iowa.
In order to improve your chances at landing a job after graduation I would suggest being flexible with location. Even if moving to the Midwest is uncomfortable for you, having a career in Ames Iowa far outweighs being unemployed in New York City.
Ashton Kutcher said it best, “As long as you’re uncomfortable it means you’re growing”.
