NCAA Doles Out AASP Grants

The NCAA, as maligned as it is in the national media, has the best interest of student-athletes in mind all the time. That can be seen this week as the NCAA is handing out more than $4 million in grants to nine Division I schools to support academic programs that help student-athletes earn degrees.

At GTG, we believe in the underlying principle at play here – helping student-athletes. We take a different approach to what constitute success, however.

The NCAA – and its member institutions – place a high value on APR scoring. In our mind, that’s not a true measure of success for an athletic department and a school. Sure, those students may finish a degree and graduate. But, are they prepared for life after their sport? Do they have tangible skills that will land them a steady job?

Too often, those questions are never asked. Student-athletes graduate with a degree and expect to be able to easily find a job only to find them lost in an identity crisis.

That’s what we are here for. We want to work with athletic departments to create plans for student-athletes when their athletic careers are over. Success on and off the court/field/pitch do not have to be mutually exclusive.

We want to change the conversation. Join us in our mission.
