A unique partnership between Wells Fargo and Game Plan offers student-athletes a better way to learn financial literacy.

Game Plan firmly believes a student-athlete’s financial literacy is integral to their personal development. From basic budgeting and saving, to loans and compound interest, an understanding of personal finance is vital to a student-athlete’s success throughout each stage of their life.

Wells Fargo brings their Financial Education Series called “Hands on Banking” to college student-athletes through a unique partnership with Game Plan. Game Plan’s online platform of eLearning resources is a better way for student-athletes to learn about financial education. The Wells Fargo Financial Education modules are available now in Game Plan’s eLearning Library for all Game Plan customers to access and assign to students.

What Makes This Better?

The Wells Fargo modules are designed with student-athletes in mind to maximize retention and save time. Each module is broken down in to lessons and the lesson’s can be assigned separately to allow students to take one or many at a time. This method also allows users to select lessons from different modules and pick the topics that are most relevant to that user.

Each lesson takes less than 7 minutes. I’ll say that again, each lesson takes less than 7 minutes. Why is this important? The average student-athlete has about an 8 minute attention span, according to 2015 Attention Span Statistics. Each lesson provides a brief tutorial on the financial topic and uses quiz questions intermittently to improve retention.  More to come next week on student-athlete retention.

The financial education series includes five modules designed to correspond with the various stages of a student-athlete’s college experience, covering the following topics:

  1. Getting Started: Terminology; savings and checking accounts; online/mobile banking; tracking spending
  2. Earning $: Job search and interviewing; how to interpret a paycheck; taxes, withholdings and benefits
  3. Spending Smart: Shopping tips; car purchase and insurance basics; renting and Leases
  4. Save, Invest & Build Wealth: Types of investments; guidelines for investing; savings and interest; building wealth
  5. All About Credit: Credit risks and benefits; how to build credit and your report; credit cards and loans; managing debt
