A Student-Athlete’s Guide to Surviving Spring Semester

By March 29, 2017 No Comments

With spring in full bloom and the weather getting warmer, it’s no surprise that student-athletes across the country would much rather leverage their time anywhere but in the library.

Unfortunately, this is the time of year when studies and career planning matter most. The end of semester is quickly approaching which means due dates, deadlines, final exams, and graduation for some are well on the radar. Here is our go to list for overcoming springtime stress and finishing the semester strong!

Make a List.

With the end of semester just a few weeks away, now is the time for student-athletes to take a page out of their own playbook. Just as the final seconds in a game can change the outcome, so can the last few weeks of the semester. In order to stay on track with all of the end of semester deadlines, it can be helpful to make a list of everything that needs to be completed and set tasks to accomplish each week.

Get Outside.

Need a break from the rows of books and eerily quiet library study rooms? Try changing things up a bit and study outside. Sometimes the sunshine is just what you need to make the process a little less gloomy. Bring your teammates along and tackle the end of semester stress.

Plan Ahead.

Depending on your sport, the spring could be the busiest time of year. With practices, workouts, and games in full swing- it may be difficult to find the time to meet all of the end of semester assignment deadlines-let alone begin a job search. If this is the case, it can be crucial to plan ahead. This is a critical time for both juniors and graduating seniors to lock in summer internship and job opportunities. There are only a few weeks left in the semester, so dig deep now and get ahead of the chaos so that there won’t be any extra stress come game time.

Stay Focused.

You’ve worked hard all semester, but how will you perform when it really counts? The last few grades of the semester can be enough to make or break your GPA. This is why it’s important to finish what you’ve started. A student-athlete doesn’t stop playing until the game is over, and the same should go for their studies. Don’t quit now, stay focused and get the grade you’ve worked for. It will all be over before you know it.

Spring semester can be a tough time for student-athletes to stay on top of their studies and apply for jobs and internships with some sports in full swing and summer around the corner. However, academic performance and career planning during the last few weeks of the semester can sometimes have a huge impact on final grades and career outcomes. We hope this guide will help student-athletes finish strong and hit one home this semester!
