Recently, 60 Minutes, the NCAA, LEAD 1 and others have signaled to college athletics administrators that sports wagering represents an ever-growing threat to the integrity of sports programs and the well-being of student-athletes.
In May of 2018, SCOTUS gave states the option to legalize and regulate sports wagering , and many states quickly wrote new legislation to do just that. By the end of 2018, eight states legalized sports wagering with a wave of new states moving quickly in that direction.
On college campuses, sports wagering has long been pervasive. 75% of college students (including both athletes and non-athletes) reported gambling during the past 12 months.*
Specific to college athletes, 43% of student-athlete men and 21% of student-athlete women think that it “is acceptable so long as you wager on a sport other than the one in which you participate.” 24.3% of student-athlete men and 4.5% of student-athlete women reported betting on sports during the past 12 months.*
Given the sheer scale of the sports wagering marketplace, (estimated to be in the hundreds of billions and growing quickly), it is attracting massive new investment, particularly in technology.
When it comes to sports wagering, it is clear the marketplace is changing rapidly. This speed of change and the high risk nature of sports wagering is bringing even the most prepared athletic department cause for concern.
